Labour Day 2023

International Workers' Day Celebrated Worldwide

Honoring the Achievements of Laborers

International Labour Day, also known as May Day, is observed each year on May 1 to recognize and celebrate the contributions of workers around the globe. This day serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices made by laborers throughout history, while also highlighting the importance of workers' rights and fair labor practices.

Origins and Significance

The origins of International Labour Day can be traced back to the late 19th century during the Industrial Revolution. In 1886, a group of workers in Chicago, USA, staged a series of strikes to demand better working conditions and an eight-hour workday. These strikes led to violent clashes with the police, resulting in the deaths of several workers. In memory of these fallen comrades, May 1 was chosen as the day to commemorate the struggles of laborers.

In 1889, the International Workers' Congress in Paris officially designated May 1 as International Labour Day, which was later adopted by many countries around the world. This day has since become a symbol of unity and solidarity among workers, regardless of their nationality or occupation.
