Devastating Quake Rocks Western Turkey

Over 5000 Injured as Buildings Collapse

IZMIT, Turkey (AP) - A powerful earthquake struck western Turkey early today, killing over 1000 people and injuring more than 5000 in at least four other cities. The death toll stood at 1173 at 1600 GMT.

The quake, which struck at 3:02 a.m. (0002 GMT), was centered near the city of Izmit, about 60 miles southeast of Istanbul. It was the strongest earthquake to hit Turkey in decades and caused widespread damage.

Buildings collapsed in several cities, including Izmit, Adapazari, and Golcuk. Rescue workers are searching for survivors trapped in the rubble, but the death toll is expected to rise as more bodies are found.

The earthquake was followed by several aftershocks, including one that measured 5.9 on the Richter scale. The aftershocks have caused further damage and hampered rescue efforts.
